▌SCREENINGS ▌Saving Screen on the Green, #HBO #DMV #Summertime!

Screen on the Green is indeed the mark of summer in the city (cue Regina Spektor!) HBO pulls out the big screen on the National Mall, and beginning at sundown every Monday night, an ole, nostalgic classic revs up to crowds gathered on blankets and lawn chairs. (Sweet!) The festivities were almost nixed last year, and according to the pushers behind "Save Screen on the Green," (their advocacy earned Screen on the Green 2nd place in Washington City Paper's "Best Festivals" category) there's still no final word from HBO that it's committed to a 2010 movement. If you've ever partaken, do read on. The viral movement continues:

Dear Movie Lover,

One year ago this week, HBO canceled "Screen on the Green."

In response, a citywide campaign to "Save Screen on the Green" was launched - and it worked.
But the campaign's not over yet. HBO hasn't yet decided whether or not they'll host "Screen on the Green" this year, so we're back in action.

The DC Film Alliance needs $2,000 to upgrade our website and prepare it for our next letter writing campaign. Will you chip in $20 to help build our website and save "Screen on the Green"?

"Save Screen on the Green" isn't being run by the city - or a bunch of fancy corporate sponsors. It's being run by regular Washingtonians, just like you, who care about saving our favorite film festival. The project is a program on the DC Film Alliance-- the same folks who bring you the DC Shorts Film Festival.

Last year, the "Save Screen on the Green"  website was used to contact  Washington companies about co-sponsoring "Screen on the Green" -- and Comcast came to the rescue. This year, our website has attracted attention of other potential corporate sponsors who want to save "Save Screen on the Green."

But we want to do this right - and run the best possible campaign we can. That's why we need your help. Please make a donation to "Save Screen on the Green" now. Thanks for your support - and don't forget to tell your friends to visit savescreenonthegreen.org to join the campaign!

The story centers around 85-year-old artist Jimmy Mirikitani who lives on the streets just beyond the Twin Towers view. It takes an interesting turn into Mirikitani's past when heretofore witnessing filmmaker turns advocate and 9/11 completely upheaves and redefines 'home.' The film is part of BBP's FOCUS-IN Series and is the feature pic for January. FOCUS-IN screens important films by local, national, and international filmmakers. Each segment offers a focus dedicated to social justice, peace, and community value. FOCUS-IN is always free and open to all. BBP would gladly accept donations. | FREE | busboysandpoets.com

Run through Sankofa Video, Books & Cafe over at 2714 Georgia Ave. TODAY for 'Favela Rising'. The film follows a "former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro's most feared slum." The grassroots Afro Reggae movement is threatened by a tragic accident that could stop the community's mobilization. Anderson is able to rally his community to "counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police." MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM... Iranian Film Festival 2010 >> Run right through Freer

Going on right now (as in this weekend and next week) you should def check out this happenstance. Happenstance for me, cuz I was just watching 'Amanpour.' on CNN via iPod and thinking, Hmmmm...I wonder if there are any good Moussavi docs or narrative interpretations?
And then I found out Iranian Film Festival 2010 is happening in DC! Yay! Not sure I'm gonnna find a Moussavi pic, BUT there are definitely some titles that are in high demand. The screenings are free, and tickets are available an hour before each showing. Still, prepare to stake your claim early as seats are expected to fill up fast.
Learn more about each film over at the Smithsonian's site. Dates, times and location are also available.

Yours truly is particularly intrigued by the doc titled Consulting God Estekhareh, by Mohammad Sadegh Jafari. Abbas Kiarostami will be live and in full effect all festival long. Peep the fest descriptor below.

The Freer Gallery of Art is located at Jefferson Drive and 12th St., SW, Wash., DC. Metro map it.

In Freer's own words:

The Freer’s fourteenth annual festival of Iranian films presents five new films
and a video installation by Abbas Kiarostami. This series is organized by Carter
Long of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
, and with the support of ILEX
Foundation
: Olga M. Davidson and Niloofar Fotouhi.

Headliner, Abbas Kiarostami (with the stunna shades on) discussing his directorial style.
