Throwback: When Did Mandela STOP Being On the U.S. Terrorist List? It Wasn't 1990.

I wrote the following entry for moretanthanmost in 2008. Moretanthanmost was a summer outfit I got into over at Today.com. (I. PROMISE. YOU. David Letterman is a biter!) But anywho, as ludicrous as it sounds, the U.S. as a nation-state did not cease to regard Nelson Mandela as a terrorist with the events of February 11, 1990. It wasn't until 2008 that the U.S. moved away from calling active resistors of apartheid terrorists--on the record. Read on. I just might run through the Avalon to catch a showing of the much ballyhooed Invictus. What do you think? What are your thoughts?

american terrorist, pt 2
Published by jess_johnson--July 1, 2008

Now! I pick on John McCain because he’s running for president. Don’t view this as an exercise in un-american-ness (the week of the 4th…) we salute YOU, sir, we salute YOU! [insert side-eye signal here.]

Federalies can stay off my doorstep, thnxmch. But let’s take a closer look at how we define ‘the enemy’ and how we celebrate those who ‘defend’ ‘us’ against ‘them’. Here’s the brutal truth: 2 in 10 people living in the United States are terrorists and half don’t even know their status!
(according to a convenient sample…)

(okay…i referenced myself)

Here are a few telltale signs YOU could be a terrorist:

  • You thought the Dalai Lama was a good person.
  • You considered Nelson Mandela a hero 24 hours ago.
  • You remotely* resemble Sean Bell or Amadou Diallo. (*are within a 2-ft range of their height; within or beyond their complexion gradation; below or over 200lbs; own any article of clothing of the same fabric/style/color…)
  • You live near a levee, toxic waste center, or playground with chipped paint.
  • There are checkpoints in your neighborhood, but 911 kinda takes a while in case of emergency…hope you got a Plan B!!
  • Speaking of Plan B–you know, have had, or expect to have an underweight child and only your local convenience store has baby formula…if you have one.
  • You’ve noticed a hike in your property tax–and is there a Starbucks coming to your town?
  • You have an “accent.”
  • You admire Baron Davis. Rick Ross. G. Garvin. Or maybe you just don’t prefer to shave it off right away…
  • You wrap your head for reasons of faith/style/bad hair day.

If you agreed to one or more of these statements, you could be a terrorist. SUCKS TO BE YOU!! (and me??)
Who’s left to be ‘us’?

In Case You Missed It: We Are The World 25 For Haiti

INSTALLMENTone (ProDev that could include working for Jean Grae?!)

As promised...

I am beginning this bi-weekly roundup of opportunities that have caught my eye for your professional advancement. I want you to step your game up with me in 2010. That being said, this entry is divided into 2 main sections: Online and Offline. There's a lot you can do without ever leaving your precious computer. But you'd be whack if you stopped there, so I've included a few offline opportunities you need to get into as well. In this inaugural roundup of sorts, I'm including a few resources you'll see often on this site. I recommend you become well acquainted with them, as I will likely return to them often. Here's where I stop gabbing and let you go to work.

Happy trails!

internships.

yearoftheblacksmith.com
Talib Kweli's outfit, Blacksmith TV announced yesterday that they are looking for interns! If you're into Talib Kweli, Jean Grae (side-tackler MVP >> Happy Couples, beware.) , Pete Rock, Strong Arm Steady and think you can play with the majors--go get your resume did-ed[sic] up! Check out the link above for more info.

get technical.*

Who cares about your movie if there is no story? I'm the number one advocate for a pretty picture, but the arthouse look will never be anything more than a 'look' without the narrative kicker. My weakness by far. Beefed up storytellers go back and forth over method at The Story Department, which can only be good for the aspiring screenwriter or any writer--fiction filmmaker, novelist or journalist-bent documentarian. The most recent entry is all about what really begins the story: an 'inciting incident' or a 'call'. Check it out.

In this edition of Film Riot, Ryan Connolly and the gang are going to teach your audio how to stunt. This is a podcast worth subscribing to if you're the MP3 downloader type. Heree you'll find extremely practical advice that comes GRATIS. Catch up on what you've been missing via Film Riot's site or over at the iTunes store. I recommend you start with the 12/2/2009 episode, because for whatever reason I'm inspired by camera shopping. This is a low budget walk through models that get the job done.

If you do indeed have the moolah to spare, visit DCFilm.org for information on classes and workshops happening from here to B-More in acting, directing, editing--you name it, they've probably got it. DO. NOT. SLEEP. On this indispensable resource.

get inspired.

I 'sice' this man often, but, honestly, Pete Chatmon's words of wisdom are always timely. Follow him regularly at Tanqueray's go-getter outfit, We Resist Simple. (That is, if you're 21 and over.) Every industry presents its challenges, as you'll see across the site, but there's nothing like the humility of being a rookie. If you are to maintain focus against all odds and find your muse, too, you'll need some TED-like food for thought. Following these entries are theory put into practice--it's not simply the fluffy stuff.

So the infamous Hollywood Temp knows how to keep you entertained and informed. For example, when this guy isn't putting the UTA Joblist out there (that is, the beginner's drool pool of dream jobs--an "internal document" of the United Talent Agency), Temp X is producing the "only thing scarier than Ari Emanuel"--his Espresso Macchiato--with 3 shots. Definitely a must-read while ye dream dreams of Major-dom.

Uh...do I NOT tell you about some pretty cool places to be every week?? That is not for your health or because of any charity or goodwill on my part. It's for inspirational purposes. Come see me for local stimuli. You never know what occurrence will move you to a screenplay, a short or even a poem. So your welcome in advance. :-D

Disney's plan to release 'Alice' on DVD early upsets theaters - latimes.com

Disney's plan to release 'Alice' on DVD early upsets theaters - latimes.com

Posted using ShareThis

preOSCAR: The AMPAS "PR Nightmare of epic proportions"

The narrative around the narratives:

Sooooooooo...the top Oscar contenders--each weighing in with 9 noms apiece for their films Hurt Locker and Avatar--are ex husband and wife!

Yes: Kathryn Bigelow--only the 4th woman to be nominated in the Oscars' Best Director category, and the absolute 1st woman to receive the DGA honor--used to be Booskied up with James 'produceamoviebymebabyandbeaZillionaire' Cameron.

HOWZ'ABOUT THAT!?

Before I get into what John Luchetti said over at FilmStage.com, let me just share this little PSA with the Kathryn Bigelow haters and biters: SIT. DOWN. SHUT. UP.

Folks who binge on -isms never fail to amaze me. People are really trying to discredit her hustle on the premise of a relationship that's been over since 1991. This may come as a shock to some, but I was a full 3 feet shorter in 1991. So if you are that pressed to play Blocker, go 86 yourself.

That being said--you should know by now that I'm an 'Avatar' hater. I can't comment on 'Hurt Locker' beyond saying, I would've never guessed Bigelow directed it, and a mighty 'POW!' to her for wrestling with the big boys on their so-called turf. This is an EXTREMELY major deal when only 6% of the industry is female at the directorial level and even more shameful where cinematographers are concerned, according to Dr. Nsenga K. Burton, Ph.D. writing for TheBlackBoxOffice.com.

I don't have an issue with James Cameron, so don't think I'm trying to flip the script, but I'll give full vent to my 'Avatar' beef once we get to Oscars week. Trust and know my reasons aren't hardly as patriarchally contrived as the people I just shouted out. I'm very interested, however, in whether or not Luchetti is right. He believes the fact of Cameron's ex-husband status may--and should--get in the way of an 'Avatar' win. Cameron's already enjoyed overwhelming success at this level per 'Titanic', but I'm writing to say two things in particular.
1) I don't think Bigelow would want a sympathy Oscar at the hands of her ex's goodwill and sportsmanship.
2) I don't think Lee Daniels would care for a 'sympathy' Oscar, either. BUT in the name of giving folks their flowers before they're dead, why don't we quell this alleged media-storm before it's time by drumming up the Academy in 'Precious' favor?

Because when has the Academy ever really given an Oscar to Black folks for their actual body of work? It seems to me, that they give melanin-ized nods when they anticipate a drought or happen to remember their 'commitment to diversity' workshops. There's always this backed up stream during some Awards seasons, as if to make up for lost time.

No, really. Look at this list of nominees--not even winners--in the history of the Oscars in Black via Entertainment Weekly. Compare this against the track of Black Oscar winners in the most contentious categories via Indiana University.
So while Bigelow would be the 4th nominated woman, Daniels is only the 2nd Black director nominated, period.

And even after I've intimated my case for a Lee Daniels win...I realize this is ridiculous. It's like fighting for crumbs in the Big House, when we need to just take the whole loaf and burn down the house.
GRRRRRRR....

You Survived Snowmageddon...Now Trek to a Thawing Metro Near You

So, the dreaded commercial holiday may be about the gushy stuff, but to reduce it to Sweethearts and card cutouts wouldn't be fair. Tis also the season to raise extra awareness about sexual assault, HIV/AIDS (February 7th), being kidnapped Africans in the Americas, and some way, somehow, somebody managed to cram President's Day in here, too. Haiti is no less devastated by the earthquake of January 12th and the subsequent aftershocks--both 'natural' and manmade. Get rid of your cabin fever this weekend, but please don't get so busy getting down, you forget to count your blessings AND share them, aspiring filmmakers. If you feel like getting down in B-More this weekend, by all means. There's a Haiti Benefit taking place over @Paradox--Deep Sugar Dance for Haiti. But if your Michelins don't look like they'll fare that well, this first event at BloomBars in Columbia Heights is a great way to kick off this Va--Valll--Valll-ennnn---ooh...YOU know what I'm trying to say. RIP Alexander McQueen. His fashion, attention to detail and extravagance will be oh-so-sorely missed by this blogstress. He was one of the most stunning, exciting productions I've ever bought a zillion dollar Vogue to see--or snuck to the late '90s/early aughts Style channel to watch. Oh, 2010...you're already a doozy.

But Wait--There's CHOCOLATE?! #openDC

Soooooooooo...
What better way to celebrate Singles' Awareness Weekend than to get woke while eating chocolate at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian?! (Naming...i know...) February 13th and 14th, it's going DOWN. 4th St & Independence Ave., SW, all day. See schedule here.

"The museum invites visitors to enjoy a tasty assortment of presentations.
Spectacular Peruvian scissor dancers compete in endurance, acrobatics, and
creativity. Kuna textile artists from Panama and Colombia share the art of
making their charming, colorful molas. Hands-on activities encourage
young and not-so-young visitors to investigate the Mayan glyph for “cacao,”
grind cacao beans, and froth their own hot chocolate.
Food demonstrations, a Chocolate Talk about the science and sustainability of the cacao plant, and one-on-one discussions with indigenous Bolivian cacao growers offer different perspectives
on this surprisingly complex subject. Finally, the museum presents Burwa dii
Ebo/The Wind and the Water
, a contemporary Kuna coming-of-age story by the Igar Yala Collective of Panama in a Valentine’s evening Dinner and a Movie."

OMGeeeee! Noisettes' 'Saturday Night' (Video)

SOoooooooooo--you have to know that I super, capital HEART The Noisettes! Thanks, ThisIsRealMusic.com!

They're a UK delight, and I think the most fitting description I've ever heard of Shingai Shoniwa's voice (she plays the BASS--come. see. her.) matched up with guitarist Dan Smith and drummer Jamie Morrison is "Billie Holiday fronting the White Stripes."

This video is the visual manifestation of 'Saturday Night' from their sophomore album, Wild Young Hearts. I'm almost not kidding you when I say I crank their freshman jammie, What's the Time, Mr. Wolf? darn near daily.

This Sis is absolutely beautiful!! Hope you enjoy! I'll weigh in on the graphics later. Mi cama awaits.

POST SCRIPT
Shingai Shoniwa really, truthfully, seriously is one of the faces I need to see on my living room furniture box. Even though I'm supposed to be "grown", it's amazing what seeing a minor reflection of yourself represented on-screen does for your esteem--even if momentarily.

Which reminds me of @Wale's tweets today. Darker sistahs were going OFF about the Diddy-like casting of 'Pretty Girls' via Twitter, and I gotta say, I at minimum, appreciate that Wale was even fazed by the discontent. He said he wants a 'Tyra' show spot so he can explain how the video biz works. *Sighs* It is what it is, fam. But I WILL say 'My Sweetie' (even tho it's not the TV'd buzz) is a nice concession. Big up to the Naija representation.

A Varying POTUS Treatment a la Boondocks

This is coming from TheUrbanTwist.com, who suggest season 3 of 'The Boondocks' will bring its own POTUS philosophy to the table come March 28th.

Read the graphic for an indication.

ONLY Because I heart Tsu'Tey...

...and because I'm in the middle of this self-imposed 'Avatar' deconstructionist project (as we draw nearer to Oscars 2010)--I ran across a story from NaviHomeTree.com which just so happened to mention that Laz Alonso will be starring alongside Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat and the incomparable Ruby Dee, as well as Loretta Devine in the pol-com 'Love, Barack.'

Here's my stutter step:
Alonso plays a "handsome, dynamic African American working for the local McCain office."

Hm.
He'll fall in love with Sherawat's character--an Obama volunteer coordinator in the month leading up to--you guessed it--Election Night 2008.

(Is that right...)

All resentment aside, keep on the lookout. According to IMDB, the film is still in the pre-production stages. An interesting concept. Gee, POTUS--look whatcha done did to H'W'D. smh

Melyssa Ford Channels Ntozake Shange For Own Stage Production

Melyssa Ford and her inspiration.

Get the full scoop from Bossip.com and TeamYee.tv.

The Canadian-born well video- and magazine-spreaded Melyssa Ford says Jim Jones' ('Hip Hop Monologues: Inside the Life & Mind of Jim Jones', written, produced and directed by Howard University alum J. Kyle Manzay) on-stage production inspired her to helm her own project.

Ford will, reportedly, act and sing in her 'For Vixens Who Considered Homicide When the Video Became Too Much.'

I'm actually halfway dying to know what When Chickenheads Come Home to Roose author, Joan Morgan thinks. Morgan, recognized as as a "hip hop journo" opened her non-fiction paperback with an account of how deeply she wanted the original 'For Colored Girls...' to resonate and validate her existence as a young Black female facing and resisting inscription.

Definitely expect more from me on this.
There are entirely TOO many intriguing intersections of race, class, gender performance, and on and on and on and. :-D Muy interesante.

Regarding Super Bowl 44

That is all.

"How To Make It In America": Required Viewing 2/14 @ 10P on HBO

Cool New Show Alert: “How To Make It In America” (via The Frisky)

Victor Rasuk, Stop Loss (Google)
Luis Guzman (:-)), Google
Kid Cudi'll show up??!--I'M SOLD.

From the same folks who brought you 'Entourage' (Rob Weiss (hahahaha), Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg), comes the East Coast counterpart 'How To Make It In America.' It looks like every young hustla's running biopic. Literally. So, I'm actually going to call it required viewing. The industry is fashion, but these kids are about to stage their break-in as best as they can using street sense only. (But is there any other way?)

The show stars Victor Rasuk ('Lords of Dogtown', 'Life Is Hot in Cracktown', 'Che' (!)), Luis Guzman ('Oz', 'Anger Management'), and Kid Cudi (!) as Domingo Dean. Don't expect Mescudi to be the resident 'shuck-n-jive', though. SOHH reported in December that he worked with the writers to ensure his character was as far from music as possible.
The show premieres Sunday 2/14 on HBO @ 10P. So if you're NOT snuggled up with anyone, join me at le living room furniture box over Twitter, Lindt and Dulce de Leche ice cream.

Happy Superbowl!!

I mean, I guess I shouldn't endorse any team on the record, y'know...
BUT who cares?!
