WEEKEND: 2 Very Good Night Suggestions

The United States has now spent $1 trillion on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Meanwhile, our public schools and universities are facing massive cuts, millions of Americans are without health care, the earth is desperate for loving attention. Clearly, our lawmakers need the poets to tell them how to spend the next $1 trillion. Bring your vision for the country and the planet to the Capitol! On Thursday, March 11, we will create and read aloud a collaborative Cento poem at Upper Senate Park. Please bring a line from a poem (up to 12 words), by you or by someone else, that articulates this vision. Write or type your line on a piece of paper. Include the name of the poet, your name (if different), and your home town. The Cento will begin with these lines sent to us by Adrienne Rich, from “An Atlas of the Difficult World”:
I know you are reading this poem listening for something, torn between bitterness and hope, turning back once again to the task you cannot refuse ...

Presented through the arts, Black History and Women’s History months are celebrated at the Historical Society of Washington on March 11. “Art Salon this month presents an acknowledgement, display and conversation of transcendence above and beyond the struggles of history through today. Dolores Kendrick, Washington’s esteemed Poet Laureate, will read original works to open eyes, ears, and minds to voices of the past while opening the stage floor to the women of the theater group The Saartjie Project, contemporary artist Holly Bass. Perseverance is displayed into visual terms, through thelarger than life sculptures of Akili Anderson to anchors an exhibit of Solomon Wondimu’s masterpiece of Sojourner Truth.

Voices Organizing for International Change, Empowerment and Support is a monthly event to raise funds and awareness for grassroots organizations in Africa that support youth empowerment, development and leadership through the arts.  This month -  Spotlight on Heal the Hood, an organization in South Africa formed to help youth gain skills, jobs and empowerment. Heal the Hood projects include endeavors to help youth combat racism and xenophobia, and events to empower youth through competition, performance and community outreach.
