BLONDES: Are we done yet? #signifying #365woman

(haha!)

Writing for international film magazine, BFI Sight & Sound, Lucy Bolton asks the question: What's so fascinating about 'the blonde'?

Bolton successfully makes the argument that 'the blonde' in cinema has been oversimplified--citing a range of complex characters who just "happen to be fair-haired"--but she still has to admit how that sign functions in full context of a picture's actors. The blonde injects unnecessary competition into an already estrogenic situation: she gets "the guy", she gets to be "the hero", she gets to be the object of affection (keyword: OBJECT), she gets, she gets, she gets...And it's always 'she' because 'he' in blonde would register as emasculating--which Bolton will speaks to in the case of Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Ridiculous, no? Nevertheless true.

Read the full article here. You might check out the whole Blonde Crazy season they're celebrating, too.

A nice follow-up for those who'd like to vent at-length about the sign that won't die [see my own beef with colonial impositions of 'beauty'] is a Trace Magazine photo feature called, "Brooklyn Blondes." Download the magazine here. (I LOVE this magazine!)
